Paris Texas Leica

Me doing my best to channel Nastassja Kinski's character, Jane Henderson, in one of my favourite movies, Paris, Texas.

For the longest time I have been wanting to do a shoot inspired by the most classic scene in one of my favourite movies, Paris, Texas.

When I first started taking pictures I used to enlist friends to be in photo shoots styled to look like characters from David Lynch movies and I loved how this process would involve using cinema as inspiration and feed my love of fashion and styling.

I moved away from photographing people and developed a love for random, inanimate objects as my subject of choice. Whilst I love this genre, it has left a person shaped hole in my heart and I knew I wanted to get back to this creative process again.

I have owned this pink jumper for a long time now and I knew it would be perfect to style for a Paris Texas inspired portrait session.

But what really brought this whole series together was a giant camera we own (that i actually hate using) that due to it’s size, is referred to as the “Texas Leica” but is actually a Fuji GW690.

The name for this camera, and the fact that it’s a medium format made it ideal for this shoot.

And so the Paris Texas Leica project was born.

With enough convincing I would have gone as far as to dye my hair blonde just for this shoot!

We opted for Kodak Portra 400 pushed 1 stop in development to add a little more punch in the colours and I have to say I’m really happy with how it turned out.

I wished I could have gone all out and got a full set that embodied the scene more fully but I think that was something that was allowing me to procrastinate ever pulling the trigger (or should I say shutter) on this photo project.

I knew it would have enough of a nod to the movie with the pink fluffy jumper and the poses I tried to do which all came from this pinterest board of scenes from the movie.

I love the texture of the jumper on film - it just looks so lush!

We also shot a series of Instax Wide to evoke that BTS sort of feel that movie sets had back in the day.
